Surprise! Your Health Insurance Plan Doesn't Cover Everything!

So it's Monday morning. You go out to check the mail. It's a letter from your Doctor. You open it up and…BAM! You owe $600 for a procedure you had last month! You ask yourself…but I have Health Insurance? Why do I owe anything? This is a common occurrence and people simply don't understand that all Health Insurance plans have gaps!

What's a gap? This is basically a "gap" in coverage. This is where your lovely Health Insurance plan that you pay every month comes up short. This may be due to having a high deductible, coinsurance, or maximum limits that you may be unaware of.

So what's an everyday American to do? You're not an insurance expert?! Well this is where ancillary products might be a good idea. These are additional insurance products that can cover that "gap" in coverage that ALL insurance products have. BREAKING NEWS: Your Health Insurance plan doesn't cover 100% of the cost…EVER!

Now that you are informed, what do you do? First and foremost, buy a Critical Illness policy! These are great little products that essentially will provide a lump-sum payment in the event you get a catastrophic type illness. These policies can be added to your existing Health Insurance plan and provide extra income in the event of Cancer, Heart Attack, Stroke, or some other Terminal Illness. You can use these lump-sum payments to cover the deductible, coinsurance, and co-pays that come with most Health Insurance plans. They also come in pretty handy with paying the bills while you are unable to work. Most important of all, these policies take the focus off of your bills and put it back on you getting better!

Another thing that you may be unaware of is that you can get Accidental Death and Dismemberment Coverage. These also can be added to your current Health Insurance plan. Accidents do happen. Lose a finger, a limb, your sight in an accident? Have no fear! You're covered! This type of coverage will cover those pesky deductibles, coinsurance payments, and co-pays.

Discount cards, use them! You can use these great little cards sometimes in conjunction with your current Health Insurance plan. There are great providers out there that offer discounts on Dental, Vision, and even Prescription Drugs! You ready for the best part? A lot of the time you can get these types of discount cards for FREE! Yes, FREE! These cards may not cover the entire cost, but why pay full price right?

Another option out there is to get a Fixed Indemnity plan as opposed to the regular Major Medical plan. A Fixed Indemnity plan is an Insurance plan that will pay out specific dollar amounts for all the different things it's used for. Not only will you always know how much the policy will pay out beforehand, these plans come without deductibles, coinsurance, or co-pays! These plans are also lower in cost. This is because they do pay out a lower amount in the long run. The trade-off being they pay right off the bat instead of waiting for the deductible to be hit. They can be great if you don't go the doctor that often and are just looking to get some sort of relief!

The most important thing to remember is you need to take control of your Health Insurance plan. Don't just buy the first policy you see. It is best to go through a licensed Health Insurance agent, they're the expert. Just be sure to ask about covering the "gaps!"

  1. Thanks for the post. I appreciate your writing. Last year I suffered a lot of dental problem and my insurance could not cover all the expenses. SO I adopt some stand alone dental discount plans MA and I found them really useful.
